Syl's Blog

A Bit of a Break

If you've seen my latest status update or my Mastodon profile, you might already know that I've decided to take a hiatus from blogging here. To paraphrase Marie Kondō, this blog does not spark joy at the moment, so I need to figure some stuff out and then come back to it with a fresh mindset.

I didn't know it was possible to get burnt out on blogging, but I think I am? It was starting to feel like a chore. I felt like I was just blogging for the sake of it without putting the kind of thought and consideration into it that I'd like to, which is why I unpublished my previous two posts.

...I'm also admittedly a bit afraid of throwing my deeper thoughts into the ether, which is maybe something I should mull over during my hiatus. I'm accustomed to having essays reviewed by an editor before publishing, but I would really like to get over my fear and write more essays here!

For now, though, I want to journal privately for a while instead of publicly. On top of my burnout and reservations about blogging, I have some things going on in my life that I'd rather not write about here, and I want to try writing completely on my own for a while without the knowledge that other people might be reading it. At the moment, I think I need writing to be more of a private catharsis than a public one.

Despite that long-winded explanation, I still enjoy logging things and don't see any reason why that shouldn't be public, so I'll be posting week notes over at my omg.lol weblog. They're simple, casual posts where I go over things that stood out during my week and the media I consumed. I already have a couple of them up. Just a heads up that I might not post every week, but I'll try to keep it updated fairly regularly.

I took a break from my indie recs zine this month as well, but I hope to get back to it in June. I've played some fantastic indies lately.

I'm still reading blogs, and I have a few emails I need to respond to. I'll get to them soon, I promise! I can't even tell you how much I appreciate every email that comes my way. You'll probably still see me around the blogosphere writing emails, comments, guestbook hellos, etc. And I will definitely be back here in the future. Until then, I hope you all have a lovely summer/winter, depending on where you are in the world.
