Coffee

This page is my tribute to one of my favorite things in the world that I can't get enough of: coffee!

A Coffee Questionnaire

How many cups of coffee per day? If I'm making a pot of drip coffee, I'll have anywhere from two to four full mugs. If I'm using my espresso machine, I'll usually only have one or two 8-ounce lattes.

When do you drink coffee? In the morning and afternoon. I try not to have any after 4:00pm. I rarely have a cup of coffee in the evening, but it does happen from time to time.

How do you take your coffee? Just a few splashes of oat milk. If I'm making a latte, I'll use oat milk and add a little sugar.

Do you like coffee-flavored foods? Yes! I especially love coffee-flavored ice cream and anything that has a coffee & chocolate flavor combination.

What kind of food do you like to have with coffee? I usually just drink coffee on its own, but I do love a good pastry with it. Or if I'm at a diner, give me a plate of eggs & bacon with a coffee in one of those classic ceramic diner mugs, please.

Do you have a favorite coffee mug? Animal Crossing did a limited edition collaboration with Godiva for Valentine's Day 2024, and my husband got me two of the mugs as a Valentine's gift! They're my favorites, not only because they're adorable and I love Animal Crossing, but also because they're just really good mugs. Nice quality and the perfect size. Of course, they also have sentimental value.

Why coffee? I think it's delicious, for one thing! I prefer medium or dark roasts, and I like the richness of them and the fact that you can adjust the creaminess and/or sweetness yourself by adding your preferred amount of milk, sugar, etc. I used to be more into all of the intricacies of coffee, like the different ways it's roasted and prepared, but lately I mostly just like the ritual of it. There's a reason it's associated with comfort and downtime in pop culture, and that's what it represents to me these days.

My Coffee Equipment

a cartoon illustration of an espresso machine Espresso Machine: I have a Breville 800ESXL Duo-Temp espresso machine. It's an older model that I believe was sold around 2012. We were fortunate to get ours for free from a friend a few years ago, and they never used it, so it was brand new to us. I use it often to make homemade lattes, and I've been really happy with it so far!

a cartoon illustration of a moka pot Moka Pot: I have a classic Bialetti Moka Express. It was my preferred way to make coffee before I got my espresso machine, but I don't use it as much anymore. I love pretty much everything about it, though, and I really should go back to using it more often. It's one of the easiest and most sustainable ways to make coffee, and cleaning it is super easy too.

I don't feel that I need anything particularly fancy. Same goes for my coffee grinder; it's a simple Hamilton Beach one. I don't grind beans much anymore. I used to try to buy the highest quality whole beans I could find from local shops, but most of the time now I just buy a big jug of Café Bustelo and I'm set.

Coffee Shops

My Top 3 Pastry Orders: pain au chocolat, cheese danish, apple strudel

Ordered: a mocha latte with oat milk and a blueberry sourdough bagel with plain cream cheese
Thoughts: Honestly one of the best coffees I've had. The foam was perfectly smooth, and the latte was delicious and not too sweet, so the espresso came through nicely. Lovely atmosphere, and it was super busy, which can be a bit annoying but is a good sign. The bagel was just okay, though.

Ordered: a mocha latte with oat milk and a pain au chocolat
Thoughts: This shop has two locations in north and south Knoxville. We went to the north one, and it was tiny! I have a feeling their south location is the main one and quite a bit bigger. Still, it was cute and nice, and the mocha was great. The highlight was the pain au chocolat, though. It was the perfect texture and ratio of chocolate to pastry.
