I'm Volunteering for My Library!

I've been kind of casually searching for a volunteer opportunity, trying to find something I can stick with long-term that will help my community while also speaking to me personally. I try to contribute to clothing drives and things like that whenever possible, but I've been looking for something more permanent, where I can serve in a steady role for a long time to come.

Yesterday, out of the blue, I got an email from a volunteer with the Friends of the Knox County Public Library asking if I would be interested in serving as a Branch Liaison for the library that's just a mile down the road from me. I'm a paying member of the Friends, and I've volunteered for their used book sales in the past, but I wasn't aware of the Liaison role until I got the email. Apparently, the person who served in that role is retiring next month and they're looking for someone new who lives in the area.

It feels like serendipity, in a way. It's the perfect opportunity. I love my nearby library and I'm there all the time. The librarians already know me and are probably well aware of my love for horror and mystery novels. This fits my schedule, and it's something I really want to do. Supporting libraries, preserving information, advocating for literacy and third places, public havens for anyone who needs them -- these are all incredibly important to me.

The Friends fund library programs that are outside the library's budget. They help cover the costs of the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound. They provide books for marginalized communities in Knox County. And they serve as liaisons between the libraries and their communities, which is what my focus will be.

I'll visit my library monthly to speak with the staff and show our appreciation. I'll get a feel for any of their needs that we can address and upcoming events we can help with. I'll also put up event posters and restock Friends items that are available to the public, like bookmarks and brochures. I meet with the coordinator next week to get oriented before beginning in the role in August. I can't wait!
