Internet Things Lately #4
I missed a Blaugust post yesterday! I took off work and went with my family to Dollywood, Dolly Parton's theme park. It's close to where I live, so going there is far from a new occurrence to me. It had been a few years since my last visit, though, so one of the rollercoasters we rode was a new experience: Big Bear Mountain. I liked it quite a bit! It doesn't have any loops but instead focuses on speed, feeling like you're whipping and reeling through the mountains.
We left at 8:30am and didn't get back home until 4:30pm. I was exhausted and spent the rest of the evening watching Spooky in Love and Devil May Cry on Netflix. I got a little reading in as well.
Today it's back to the work grind, but I thought I'd take a little time out to update for Blaugust. I don't mind skipping a day, and I'm just going to roll with it and not try to make up for it with an extra post or anything like that.
I have quite a big post planned for tomorrow, but today I just want to share a few things I'm loving from around the web, bringing back a series I used to do called Internet Things Lately:
Andreas created a Blaugust 2026 OPML list, which I've uploaded to my feed reader so I can easily keep up with all the participating blogs! I really appreciate this resource.
I enjoyed Matt's post about how he plays games and being behind the new-release curve, which is where I'll be quite soon as well. I always like reading about other people's gaming habits and the games they like to play, and I love the concept of patient gaming.
This post by Brennan on the YouTube channel Special Books by Special Kids is well-researched and fascinating. I had never heard of the channel before, so it was great to learn about it and get insight into some important work.
Final Fantasy VIII is the Best is one of my favorite sites, and I recently read the post The time compression battle used the limitations of the PS1 to make the world melt. I'm fascinated with the way the limitations of old game consoles forced developers to get creative, and this is one of the best examples of that. A brief history of FF8’s most impossible challenge run is another fun post from this site that will make you wonder why some people put themselves through such misery to complete a challenge run.
I found out that one of my favorite creatives streams himself sketching on Twitch! His name is Graham Annable, also known as Grickle. You can find him on Twitch at grickle14, and he uploads his VODs on YouTube at grickle. I watched his most recent VOD, and it was so charming seeing the doodles he came up with. As a Halloween fan, my favorite bit was his jack-o'-lantern lamp.
I found this essay at the Public Domain Review about the hidden labor of women who typed for men quite fascinating.
