Internet Things Lately

I thought I'd share a few things around the internet that I especially enjoyed, found interesting, or got something out of over the past couple of weeks.

Modern Font Stacks - A collection of CSS font stacks showcasing every font option available on modern operating systems. If you want the fastest-loading fonts that are completely free to use, they're all right here for you to test out in whichever weight and size you choose.

There Is No Such Thing As Other People's Children by Erik Hane - "Enjoyed" is not the word for what I felt while reading this, but it's a good reminder that there's power in community, and I think it's important to read firsthand accounts from folks in Minneapolis right now. Replacing Bovino with a slightly lesser evil is not the answer. Abolishing ICE and prosecuting everyone involved is a good place to start.

Fear of being average at Raccoon's Trash Can - I loved Adam's post about reframing how we view being average. It addresses a lot of things that I wrote about previously, about trying to get away from social media likes. I absolutely love getting different viewpoints and opinions from people on Bear. It has really helped me expand my thoughts on things.

Books are bad now and I blame the internet by Amy Shira Teitel - This YouTube video provides a good overview of the decline of literacy in the US and how social media contributes to it. I will say that I definitely don't think all modern books are bad. The majority of books I read are modern, but I do think it's a shame that there has been kind of a Netflix-ication of books and that some authors are even using AI.

Critical Minerals series from Deposits - Deposits Magazine has been doing a series on what they've dubbed "critical minerals," which are minerals that are used in global industries, like tech and renewable energy. I love learning about geology and its applications, so this series has been interesting for me. However, I think it's important to acknowledge the human labor that goes into mining these minerals and the horrible conditions that people are forced to work in just so we can have things like batteries for our smartphones. NPR has a good article covering this, so please read that in addition to the Deposits series to get a full view of these critical minerals.

It's the last day of January! We got about four inches of snow today and have been outside playing in it, so I'll have some snowy pictures to post soon. At the moment, though, I'm glad to be indoors with a cup of coffee.

I read some good books and played a lot of games in January, so I'll be doing roundups of each of those soon.

I also finished a review for Adventure Game Hotspot, which I'm excited to see go up on the site. There have been some great adventure games coming out lately, so be sure to check out the other reviews there as well.

I changed my toast button! It's now coffee-themed, and I used Sylvia's wonderful guide to customize it.

I hope you're all doing well in these difficult times.
