October Plans

October begins my favorite period of the year: the last three months and the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas seasons. Autumn and winter bring the best weather for me personally. I love the cold, wrapping up in warm clothes and blankets, and feeling like there's always a sense of celebration in the air.

It's been a difficult year throughout the world, to say the least, and I recognize that feeling the way I've described is a privilege. It's one I don't take lightly, and I hope to continue to do all I can in my tiny corner of the world to move the needle of change. I don't have great means, but I have great hope.

I have some plans for October, to revel in the season and enjoy it as much as possible, in the midst of everything. I'll outline those plans here, and then I'll check in at the end of the month with an update on how I did.

Books and Short Stories

I've mentioned this before, but I'm participating in Notebook of Ghosts' #31SpookyStories reading challenge. I'm opting to read 13 stories throughout the month because I think that's a bit more feasible than 31 alongside all my other goals.

I'm starting with a few stories from The Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories by Women, edited by Marie O'Regan. So far, I've read two: Collect Call by Sarah Pinborough and The Madam of the Narrow Houses by CaitlΓn R. Kiernan. I enjoyed them both quite a lot and am looking forward to reading more! I'm keeping up with the stories I read in this thread on Mastodon, so feel free to follow along there.

As far as books go, I have two I want to read for this spooky month: Parasite Eve by Hideaki Sena and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I'm already about a quarter of the way through Parasite Eve. Frankenstein is a classic that I've always wanted to read but somehow never have. I hope to rectify that this month, and I even have plans to write an essay on it, possibly to be posted here, once I've finished it.

Video Games

Games I plan on playing this month:

Silver Pines is the one I'm most anticipating. It comes out on Thursday, and you can read my initial thoughts on its demo in this post.

I've already started Paranormasight, and it's been intriguing and refreshing so far. I also finished my initial playthrough of Silent Hill: Townfall, which is currently my game of the year, but I'm hoping to make it through another run to get a different ending.

This is a bit of an ambitious list, but I think I can do it!

Movies and Shows

I'd like to go see Other Mommy in the theater when it releases and finish watching the Halloweeny K-drama Spooky in Love, but otherwise I'm not really setting any goals here. I re-watched Crimson Peak the other night, and I think I'd like to continue watching some horror and Halloween comfort films, but I mainly want to focus on reading and gaming this month.

Excursions

I have a few goals here:

I'm keeping it pretty low-key this month because I don't want to spend a lot of money. My main focuses are baking and painting. Danny's birthday is the 29th, so of course I want to focus on that as well.

I'd love to find a Halloween party or event to go to, but if it doesn't happen, that's fine. It's just something I'm kind of keeping in the back of my mind. I have this dream of Danny and I dressing up as Simon and Zoe from Silent Hill: Townfall, but that may have to be a dream saved for another year. 😜

Let's see how I do!

I'll leave you with an autumnal page I colored while watching Crimson Peak, my first creative activity of the season:
